4/18/22 - Bedroom Demo

We finally began working on the inside of the house. The two bedrooms on the main floor will be combined into a master bedroom and bath. One of the rooms had been renovated at some point and is the only room in the house with drywall, but even that room needs to be remade. We started in the back bedroom and the walls turned out to be more challenging than expected. They are wood paneling rather than the “fiber board” we had been told they were. Our son, Ivan, helped a few days this week, and parents Dave & Judi helped a bit too.

Once we found our groove the wall came down in about an hour. Projects overlap, and we have tried to take advantage of any dry days (there haven’t been many), so it took quite a few days to finish the demo.

We had the house inspected for asbestos and came up mostly clean. There are two rooms with less than 1% asbestos in the flooring, which means it doesn’t need any special mitigation, but we were still cautious. Taking up the flooring the way I did was a bit tedious but not very physically taxing, and was more thorough than the floor scraper without creating dust like a power tool would.

We finally finished gutting the bedroom on 4/28. The loose insulation was a challenge, and I will not speak of the experience of dealing with the rat shit in the ceiling. It is cleared, that is all that matters.

Now we need some contractors and tradespeople to help with some of the important parts.
